This year, five Indy Spartans joined forces to select two deserving applicants for this year’s scholarships. The committee reviewed 10 applications and met to discuss their qualifications and make a decision. Special thanks goes to Michelle Alexander, Amanda Kruse, Jim Nestor, Curt Phillips and Kristen Weir for taking the time to contribute to the selection process.
We are fortunate enough to once again provide two $1,000 scholarships to both incoming and current Spartans. This year, the Board of Directors agreed to dedicate one of the scholarships in the name of former Indy Spartan’s president Sherri Phillips. Get to know the recipients below:
Kayla Koch, a previous Indy Spartans scholarship recipient, will be a senior this year at MSU. The Huntington, Indiana native throws javelin for the track team and currently maintains a 3.9 GPA while studying to become a Physicians Assistant. Throughout her college career she has been heavily involved in campus clubs and activities and has even studied abroad to Dublin, Ireland. To Kayla, being a Spartan means getting goosebumps while singing the alma matter, shouting “Go Green” to other spartans and knowing that MSU is your true home and that Spartans everywhere are your family. We are pleased to award Kayla another $1,000 scholarship and will be there in spirit when she walks across the stage to graduate in the spring.
Nikaela Losievski is an incoming freshman to MSU and currently resides in Granger, Indiana. Her high school career consisted of active involvement in academic and service clubs, and she earned a 4.05 weighted GPA. Outside of academics, Nikaela has been a fighter studying to earn her black belt in Tae Kwon Do all while being diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. At MSU, she plans on studying Neuroscience and would love to be a part of the ongoing research on campus to help find a cure for her disease. Her tenacity and courage made her the perfect candidate for the Sherri Phillips Memorial Scholarship, and we cannot wait to hear about her stories when she arrives to campus this fall.
Both of these fantastic Spartans are currently planning on attending the Family Picnic on July 12, and we plan on recognizing both of them at the event. We hope you will join us in the fun and celebration! To register and for more information, click here.

Where: Fort Harrison State Park – Sycamore Shelter / 6000 N Post Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46216 ** Free admission!
To make this event even more family friendly, we have chosen a new location for our picnic this year that has restrooms and a playground right near the picnic shelter. Come early or stay late to enjoy the park’s paved and rustic trails for hiking and biking, fishing access, and more.
Activities during the picnic will include awards and recognition presentations, cornhole, bocce ball, ladder golf and fun for the kids. Lunch and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. If you can, please bring a side dish or dessert to share.
For those interested, alcohol is permitted in the park for guests age 21 and over. We ask that you remember this is a family event and small children will be in attendance. Please monitor your beverages to ensure the safety of Spartans under age 21.
Please use the link above to RSVP for this event if you think you might attend. It will help us ensure that we have enough food and beverages for everyone.
Bring your family and tell your Spartan friends! See you there!
The SPARTANS WILL. POWER Global Day of Service, set for April 18, 2015, is Michigan State University’s way of showing the world the extraordinary impact Spartans can make in a single day. This organized, collaborative effort brings Spartans together to serve others in their communities while demonstrating the reach and power of the Spartan network. This year we have teamed with Habitat for Humanity and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to offer two volunteer opportunities. Find the details below.
A) The Habitat for Humanity of Hamilton County needs help building a house in Noblesville. The morning shift is from 9:00-12:00pm. The afternoon shift is 12:00-3:00pm. You may choose one or both time slots.
B) Please join fellow Spartans and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) in cleaning up a neighborhood in the Meridian Kessler area (38th and College). The shift is from 8:00-1:00pm.
Hope to see you there! Go Green!
We would like to thank ALL Spartans who visited Indianapolis to attend the Final Four or to simply just celebrate with other Spartans. It was fantastic to see the turnout at the Slippery Noodle Saturday afternoon and evening. The Spartan Nation definitely showed up! Our Spartan basketball team made a great run in the tournament. Alumni and fans across the country showed up along the road and wanted to be in Indy for the final step. Unfortunately, the team came up a little short but it doesn’t take away the passion that the Spartan Nation showed yesterday. We hope all enjoyed themselves while in Indianapolis. We invite you to come back every time the Spartans are in Indy!
Our Spartans are on a great run through the tourney and are one win away from coming to Indy! For the Elite 8 game vs Louisville on Sunday we will once again have TWO game watch locations (both locations are family friendly):
1. Stacked Pickle – 96th St.
2. Colts Grille – Downtown (110 W. Washington St.) Jenna Rutherford, our Young Alumni Rep, will be your host.
Tip off is 2:20pm but arrive early to secure your spot!
